One of the students asked me why some computers refuse to react to a ping 
packet when the ping packet is ``large''.

To get the answer, get RFC 1122, and in that RFC read the sections 
that contain
EMTU_R (Effective MTU for Receive)
EMTU_S (Effective MTU for Send).
